Chapter Thirty-Six: Dorm Problems
My first night in the dorm was...interesting.
I was quite tired after moving into my dorm (I'm surprised I stayed up to finish up my blog), so after I posted it, I got ready for bed. Bailey and I stayed up talking until about 1 AM. I know, I know, sleep is important. But I am going to live with her, I should get to know her! Besides, she is so, so busy because Color Guard is keeping her at practice about 14 hours a day.
Anyway, before I go to sleep, I always, err, use the little girls' room. So I was just minding my own business, and flush the toilet.
Well, it just kept flushing.
And flushing.
And flushing.
And it wasn't even like a pathetic flush. I'm talking supersonic jet stream flushing.
Well the most embarrassing thing to do is mess up a toilet. And I just did. ON THE FIRST DAY.
I SHALL CONSUME YOUR DIGNITY
At this point, Bailey and I had already said goodnight. I knocked on her door, embarrassed, and said,
"Hi! Hate to bother you, but what do I do if my toilet won't stop flushing?"
She kind of blinked, and then walked past me to check out the hurricane in my bathroom. She did the same thing I did, pulling up on the lever with no avail. We both laughed, and she offered to go to the resident hall desk to talk to someone. (Thank you, Bailey!!)
We both slipped on shoes and walked out into a hall full of students playing guitar and singing and laughing. I admire their ability to be nocturnal, because I could literally feel the bags underneath my eyes at this point.
Well, there was no one at the desk, so I had to call a different resident hall desk. We returned to our dorm, laughed at the sound of my toilet still going strong, and I waited for someone to come by. (Bailey went to bed...she had to wake up at 6 AM the next day...So sorry, Bailey!!!) Not even two minutes later, a sophomore shows up. I lead her to the monster inside of my bathroom and the first thing she says is, "Oh wow, that is so loud!"
She then explained to me that since it wasn't flooding, it wasn't a major concern. "Someone will come by tomorrow to fix it," she said. Which meant that I had to sleep with a hurricane roaring in my room. To be honest, I was just so tired that I didn't mind too much. I closed the bathroom door and stuffed my towel in hopes to dull the noise just a little bit. It did help, but I did not sleep too well last night.
Me today
Oh, and did I mention our AC wasn't working. Yes, here we are in hot, hot Texas and our AC wasn't working. Sigh. I slept in the shortest shorts I could find and didn't even bother with the blankets.
Anyway, I woke up this morning around 8 AM, took a shower, and prepared for my parents to come by. We had made a list yesterday of things that I had forgotten/needed/wanted, and they decided to go to Walmart at 7 AM (God bless them) to avoid the college rush.
They came over, and the tension rods they had gotten for some curtains were too big. This worked out okay, since I had decided I needed a couple of things my first night. Some of the things we got were:
- Night Lights (I tripped one too many times last night)
- Shower Caddy (Placed on the shower head for shower-things...there is no room in there!)
- Beach Towels (For the days at the Rec center...swimming!!)
- Another Surge Protector (I have more electronics than I thought)
- Black-Out Panels (Curtains that block out the sun....useful for naps!)
- Tension Rods (Make sure you measure the window yourself...measurements online are not trustworthy.)
- Bathroom mat (Keeps your feet and floor dry)
"Oh, God, what have I done? Those sunglasses were not worth $200..."
Now, I'm sure this whole dorm thing is pretty overwhelming (at least I think so!), and are wondering what the absolute most important thing to buy is. And my answer to this is this:
Scissors.
Yesterday, I forgot to mention this, but the entire room was passing around the scissors we had bought all day. Bring extras if you can!! Scissors are so useful...
Anyway, we returned to my silent dorm. I literally ran to my toilet and cheered as I stared into the non-swirling bowl. Ugh, I think I'm losing it. But I was very grateful for whoever fixed my toilet. No more hurricanes!
While Mom, Dad, and I were putting up my curtains, maintenance came in to fix the AC. YAY! The room almost instantly became cooler when it was all said and done.
We then planned to meet with my cousin's aunt, Lynniece. We met her in the local hospital, for she is a local nurse. We couldn't talk for long (You know those nurses...busy, busy, busy!) I am so glad I have a connection inside the city though... Mom and Dad are happy about that, too.
After a nice, spicy lunch at Chuy's, the parents came to my dorm for the last time. When we arrived, I saw that my bedroom door was closed. I had tried my key before on the lock, it didn't unlock it. I freaked out!
My parents waited awhile with me for someone to come fix my door, but they had to get on the road. It was a long drive home for them.
Saying goodbye to my parents was so, so hard. Just thinking about them leaving brings tears to my eyes. I love my parents so much...seeing them walk out of my dorm was the weirdest thing. Because I knew that once they walked out, I wouldn't see them for a long, long time...
I know I can do this though. I've wanted for this for so long...and I know my parents want this for me, too.
I love you!!!
I am about to head out to a Welcome event run by the school...My roommates and I are going to Target with many other students to shop! (And get free stuff!) So much has happened and I've only been here for two days! And it's going to get a lot more exciting. :)
