Chapter Five: Bubbling in the Dark
I awoke knowing it was going to rain. (I'm not a prophet, I just have a nice weather app) It was dark - the sun was no where in sight. The clouds swirled with the howling wind and I knew, I knew today was going to be....a great day.
Determination!
So, today, students in the U.S. and Canada took the AP Literature and Composition exam. I was one of them. I was feeling pretty confident because English is one of my best subjects. I love to read great literature and write great blogs (LOL), so this course has been pretty easy for me.
So, I dressed to my mood, and looked pretty cute today. I also packed a really nice lunch and snacks. Maybe I should wake up this confident everyday.....
I arrived to school pretty early of our teacher, Mr. Langsather, bringing breakfast. And by "breakfast," I thought of a box of donuts and some coffee. However, Langsather has a habit of surprising us, and brought instead donuts, strawberries, bananas, pineapple, orange juice, bagels, cream cheese (like a 3 pound block), and STARBUCKS COFFEE. <3
After spending some time out in the lobby eating and socializing, it was finally time for our exam. There are about 100 students in AP Literature, so we were all split into four separate rooms around the building. We started our exams on time, and as I moved through the exam, I became more and more confident. I was managing my time really well. I had four questions left when all of a sudden, the lights began flickering.
Distracted, we all looked up at the lights. Then, it became dark. The A.C. went out. The sudden silence was deafening.
I couldn't see my answers, my eyes weren't adjusting!
"NOOO I HAVE TO FINISH!!!!" I yelled.
Of course, the clock was stopped. We assumed the lights would come back on soon.
It didn't.
We sat there in the dark, waiting. And, of course, I had been waiting until our ten minute break to, uh, relieve myself.
Like, really REALLY have to go.
And, of course, I have a fear of the dark. (Seriously, I have like three night lights...No shame) But, I really, really had to go! So, everybody clap, because I took a flashlight and went to the bathroom. In the dark.
It's kind of a big deal.
Anyway, so we were all just sitting in the classroom, waiting, when suddenly, we realized that the power might not come back. So the proctor starts flipping through the little instruction booklet and us doubting kids were like, "Oh, yeah, like there are instructions in there on what to do when a transformer blows..."
Well, there were instructions, apparently. (I'm always surprised by how prepared and oddly specific instructions are) We were supposed to sit there and be quiet. OOPS.
Before the lights went out, we had about two minutes left of the multiple-choice section, so we decided to just do that in the dark. So, for two minutes, we bubbled. In The Dark.
Of course, they tried to get us to keep going...
"Do you think you guys have enough light to write the essays?"
We all looked out the window into the dark storm. Uh. R u srs?
Long story short, the lights eventually came back on, and we continued like normal. Apparently lightening struck a pole and blew a transformer or whatever. I don't really care that the lights went out, I just hope I did as well as I looked today. (Daisy shirt, puppy shoes, aaayyyeeee)
