Chapter Fifty-Two: Hooray for Hollywood

Image
Hollywood came to Texas Tech last week in light of our annual Homecoming! There were events all week that had to do with homecoming, but I had a test on Friday (as did Bailey), so we stayed indoors studying most of the week. Friday, however, was the beginning of the real party. It all started with the parade. Bailey was featured in it (Colorguard!), so of course Mary and I had to go and scream at her! Besides, looking at all of the cool floats was fun! After the parade, Mary and I met up with Bailey and headed across town to pick up a friend of hers, Nate, who was visiting for the weekend. Being the lonely college students we are, any visitor is welcomed graciously. He is super nice and I am very sure Bailey enjoyed his company.  There was a pep-rally going on after the parade, but we all decided to skip it, since we wanted to pick up Nate and not feel too rushed for time. However, there was a bonfire planned at 9 PM, so we headed over in that direction soon after pic

Chapter Fifty-One: Highs and Lows

This weekend was officially "Parent Weekend," here at Texas Tech. Family flocked to Lubbock not only to check up on their precious children, but also to watch the game on Saturday. My parents couldn't come in, but Mary's grandparents came into town (and so did Bailey's dad!). It was such a treat meeting her grandparents...plus they were kind enough to treat us to non-dorm food. Very sweet people posing with Buddy Holly! Anyway, like I said, Saturday was game day. Once again, I had the wonderful opportunity to sit with Mary and her family. This was my second game, and I was ready for battle.  Game Ready! I think I look good with the flag...what do you think? I went all out. Well, I didn't paint my chest red and black (Mom and Dad probably wouldn't like that...), but I did wear a Tech shirt, along with face tattoos (see above), and brought along some red and black pom-poms! This game was so much more fun than my first one...for many

Chapter Fifty: I Solemnly Swear That I Am Up To No Good...

Today was the Honors College Convocation. Today wasn't any ordinary convocation, oh no. This is the Honors College we are talking about. To give you some perspective of what the theme was, here's the invitation we all received a couple weeks ago: That's right...Harry Potter themed! (Although, we were corrected by our Dean that Houses have been around a lot longer than Harry Potter)  If you don't know anything about me, know this: I love Harry Potter. In fact, when I was first interested in applying for the Honors College, I was asked, just out of curiosity to see if I was a good candidate, what I had read the previous summer.  I was pretty embarrassed to admit that all I had read that summer was the Harry Potter books. (Obviously it wasn't anything to worry about, because I got in!)  So, tonight, Honors students gathered in the basketball arena, not really sure what to expect.  We were greeted and randomly sorted into one of four houses: The Bell Hous

Chapter Forty-Nine: Finances 101

How many times have you heard about the poor college student? The endless Ramen Noodles, the sleepless nights, the empty piggy banks... Well, yesterday, during Women of Faith , we were lucky enough to hear about how to cure at least one of these problems. Kathleen Williams, a local financial adviser, gave us some tips on how to not be the traditional broke college student. I am just the deliverer here...give all thanks to Kathleen for not only sharing her advice, but for also letting me share it with all of you!  This blog post is basically this document with my commentary. If you want to skip my rambling, just read through the document yourself. :) So, if you want to be able to pay your bills, have a social life, and have some extra change, follow this advice!  Don't let your piggy bank get empty! Chapter Forty-Eight: Apples to Apples

Like I said in my last post, this weekend was busy...but a ton of fun!  Saturday was a pretty full day. Mary and I woke up the earliest we had ever woken up since we got to college...7:30 AM. Eeek! We decided to volunteer with Women of Faith in the morning, so we had to wake up pretty "early." All four of us (Two leaders + Mary + Me) worked over at Cabela's, for Ladies' Day Out. Basically we greeted customers as they approached the store to hand them a free bag of goodies and advertise for the Cabela's Club Card.  Donations? We couldn't stay too long because we are busy college students...plus we were not given a lot of information about the event so we didn't even know how long to stay. After 2 solid hours of work, we headed back home.  Looking cute at our volunteer service! After Bailey returned from her hometown, we headed off to Idalou, TX to visit the Apple Orchard! Guys, if you don't know anything about me, know this: I. LOVE

Chapter Forty-Seven: Change

Hooray!! It's Friday!! This week has been crazy and I cannot tell you how great it felt to slide into my desk chair and know I have three days to procrastin-uh, I mean work, work, work ! (Are you reading, Mom and Dad??) This last weekend was pretty fun! We decided to go and visit the mall and "look around" a bit. And by "look around" I mean buy clothes! I haven't been to Forever 21 in years (my home town doesn't have one...or a mall worth going to), so I think I discovered a new favorite store. Cheap and cute! Other than that and looking at apartments, we study. School is really starting to become more intense...so intense, in fact, that my desk is no longer neat and perfect but crowded and disorganized. I think I've said for the past two weekends that I was going to clean it... but this time for sure ! Monday was a pretty good day. I decided to make Mary and I my specialty...Ramen. Not just boring old Ramen though...Ramen and canned chicken!
